I’ll take a crack at this.

It appears that there is a Memphian contingent that is quite aghast at the inclusion of Triple Six Mafia in the 2007 Memphis in May Beale Street Music Fest. Now, I understand the complaint.
Some people are offended by this music.
And that is easily understandable.

I am not here to defend Triple Six Mafia.

But I am an American, and a capitalist, and a believer in freedom of expression.
And therefore I see this issue as one of economics.

1) “The kids” really like Triple Six Mafia.

2) The festival organizers know this from previous years’ experience, and want the kids to come downtown and spend a few bucks on a ticket and a corn dog.

3) The festival organizers hire Triple Six Mafia to play.

I am sure a few of the organizers are likewise offended by Triple Six Mafia’s music, but they also see this from an economic standpoint.

That oh so valuable 18-25 demographic is not going to show up for Steely Dan and Counting Crows. They just aren’t.

So my advice is thus: If you are offended enough by this music to boycott the entire festival, I think that’s a pretty good idea. I think that is a great way to express your personal displeasure with the lineup. Don’t go.

I just don’t think that’s going to keep them off the bill next year.

Like I said, the kids really dig Triple Six Mafia.
