A Couple of Weekend Dance Parties

The Memphis Scene
July 31st, 2008

An intriguing all-female deejay lineup keeps things hot for the Spin Cycle party Friday night at Full Moon Club. DJ Saturna, who in recent years has concentrated on deep house and broken beat, promises a rare drum-and-bass set. This was originally planned as a yard party at a private home, but the promoters apparently thought better of it. (10 p.m. $5 the guys, free for ladies)

One of the founding fathers of the Memphis dance-music scene, Graflin, and his longtime cohort Rick Phifer will throw it down Saturday night with a free event at Murphy's. You need to get more educated. (10 p.m., no cover)

Disturbing Video Update

Dustin Starr - World of Wrestling
July 31st, 2008

In a follow-up to a post that I made last week, there’s more news on the disturbing hardcore video that featured Mickie Knuckles.  Go here to watch the video again or to view it if you missed it.  But be forewarned, it’s pretty brutal.

I actually had a few readers stop me to tell me that they were shocked when they watched the video after hearing about it on my blog.  They felt the same way that I felt.  It was disgusting and it shows that many things in the business can happen.  Some of them very, very bad – and most guys get away with it.  But this time?  Well, this time the bad guys may not get off so easy.

Here’s a post from 411mania.com’s Ashish:

“The Mike Levy incident from a few weeks ago is now being investigated by police. The incident saw North Carolina independent wrestler Mike Levy get beaten up badly by wrestlers Devon Moore, Tank, Ian Rotten, and Rotten's son after Levy following his match with Mickie Knuckles at an IWA show. The reason for the beatdown was apparently because Levy left a knot on Mickie Knuckles' face during their match. Ian Rotten, the promoter of IWA, later said that Levy got his ass kicked for the right reasons and claimed that Levy was fine afterwards and happy he could still be part of IWA. Once press attention started coming in, Rotten said the beatdown was an angle and part of the show. The officer investigating the situation says he isn't so sure the beatdown was part of the show.”

This may be a very good lesson to those who are breaking in to the business.  In fact, it will be a great lesson for guys who like to get others in the ring and take liberties.  Now, I’m not saying that I’m totally against the whole taking liberties motion.  Because trust me, if a guy deserves to be roughed up – he should be roughed up.  But do it in a way where you don’t seriously injure him.  Don’t do it in a disrespectful way that could harm that person or others.  And in this instance, it could’ve (and probably did) do both.  He’s obviously being hurt seriously… and imagine how that video could affect children.  How about the children that were present?

I’ve had a guy in the ring with me get stiff.  After a few verbal warnings such as, “You better calm down” – “I’m not going to tell you again” – I just had to sock the guy in the nose.  I didn’t hurt him.  I didn’t even break his nose.  I just punched him in it to show him that I wasn’t playing around and he wasn’t going to hit me that damn hard again.  He bled, which is not only good for the business, but it shows that I could’ve easily done worse.  But these guys in IWA, they almost killed this Mike Levy guy for wanting to be a wrestler.

From my experience in the past, when something goes down with a rookie or someone who’s wanting to be in this business SOOO very bad… they typically will lie to authorities in order to keep their role in the wrestling business.  So, we’ll have to wait to see how this story shakes down.  I have a bad feeling that Mike Levy might tell the police and investigators that everything that went down was planned – just to get IWA off the hook and to keep his position on the roster of IWA.  Which, in my eyes, is totally dumb.  I’m more experienced, so I can see it.  But sometimes the pressure of being called a snitch… and being black-balled out of the business altogether is a dangerous thing to overcome.  What Mike may not see though, is people will respect him more for putting his foot down on the IWA for taking advantage of him.  Not only taking advantage of him – they tried to injure him… they tried to end his career… they didn’t want him to come back… and he could’ve and may be seriously injured and scarred for life from the experience.

Note to Mike Levy – Don’t let them get away with nearly killing you.  You can wrestle for people who will respect and appreciate you.  You don’t need IWA.  Stick it to them.

I would.

? like a little kid.

iDiva
July 31st, 2008
I’m not going to the beach, but I’m getting ready to take a few days off, and I feel just like this kid looks: I can’t wait! I’m thinking of all the sleeping I’ll do, the books I’ll read (OK, the wine I’ll drink), and that means I won’t be blogging for a while. I’ll [...]Continue Reading »

Hale, Tyler! Arkansas Teen a ?Fresh? Film Face

The Bloodshot Eye
July 31st, 2008

Tyler Hale and co-Fresh Films teen moviemaker Kristina McKinney of DeRidder, La., make like Ebert and Roeper during the New Orleans shoot of 'Fireflies' Tyler, in New Orleans, with Fresh Films interns R.J. Schelp and Ashley Stephens

It’s too bad that Tyler Hale, 17, doesn’t return to Wynne High School for his senior year until Aug. 18. If he were back in class this week, he’d have something to brag about to his fellow Yellowjackets in the self-proclaimed “City with a Smile” in southeast Arkansas.

He could say: “Hey, my movie’s online today!”

Out of thousands of applicants nationwide, Hale was one of 11 teenagers chosen to go to New Orleans this summer to create a short film as part of the annual Samsung Mobile Fresh Films project for beginning moviemakers. The ”Big Life Drama” he helped make, “Listening to Fireflies,” can be viewed here, through Wednesday (Aug. 6).

The rest of Tyler’s story can be found here, at The Commercial Appeal’s new online entertainment page, GoMemphis.com.

Fat Bastard Pinot Noir tasting

Whining & Dining
July 31st, 2008

There was a bit of a stir a year or two ago when we started running Buster’s ads for Fat Bastard wines. I remember a few letters to the editor about it being an unsuitable name for a wine and an unsuitable word for print. Well, look at us. We’re saying it and drinking it on the same day…

Come back at 7 tonight and join us. Bill Huddleston is going to guide us through the pinot noir, which is the newest wine to the FB line-up. I haven’t tried it yet, so I don’t know what to say about it except that I’m looking forward to it, and that if I’m ever reincarnated as an animal, a hippopotamus is at the top of my list. I’ll tell you why tonight! See you then.

Watermelon or watermillion?

Whining & Dining
July 31st, 2008

My colleague Beth Gooch says she saw a watermelon for $7.99 at the grocery. The only ones I ever buy are the tiny sugarbells at the farmers market, usually for a buck or two, and I haven’t gotten one this year. But $7.99 sounds crazy. Has anyone looked at the farmers market prices for watermelons this year? I wonder if it’s a transportation cost increase or if it’s been a bad watermelon season.
