Lamar Sorrento: Seven

Local musician/painter Lamar Sorrento is picking up speed. He’s playing with a new band, Jeffrey and the Pacemakers, almost weekly, and he’s continuing to churn out paintings of blues heroes, garage rockers, and Memphis landmarks at a mad pace.

And late last month, Sorrento released a brand-new album, Seven, which CA writer Mark Jordan reviews in today’s Playbook.

Writes Jordan:

Recorded at Ardent, the record features a crack backing unit, including [John] McClure, drummer Kurt Ruleman, and keyboardist Rick Steff. But it is Sorrento’s guitar work that is front and center. The opener, a jaunty rocker called “Sausalito Girl,” bridges the distance between Roger McGuinn and Big Star in just under three minutes. Elsewhere, Sorrento gives a boozy Dylan-esque reading on the original “Mistake,” a disc highlight with its staccato, scratched-out solo. And he manages to summon up even more six-string fire on “Tell Me That Now.”

Seven, says Sorrento, is available at CDBaby. You can also purchase copies directly from the artist for $8.
