Memphis soul stew ? Italian style!

Graziano Uliani, Italy’s Impresario of Soul, visits the Center for Southern Folklore tonight.
While his name might not be familiar to most Memphians, Uliani has booked numerous local musicians, ranging from the late Rufus Thomas to the Millennium Maddness Drill Team, for his Sweet Soul Music Festival in Porretta Terme, Italy.
Says author Peter Guralnick: “Everyone in Memphis should see the way in which their native music is treated in Porretta. At a time when buildings are being torn down at home, monuments are being erected in Porretta. But, more significantly, the music is being honored in a manner that is deserves, the musicians are being recognized not just for their stardom but for their contributions.”
I got to attend the festival 2 years ago — had a blast with Howard Tate, Irma Thomas, Wayne Jackson, Aaron Neville, and more.
Now in its 21st year, this musical tradition continues July 17-20 with the likes of Etta James, Sugar Pie DeSanto and New Orleans pianist, Henry Butler.
Unfortunately, it’s doubtful I’ll be able to go — but I will be on hand to give Uliani a big Memphis welcome at the Center for Southern Folklore tonight. Uliani will be the special guest at a reception in the Center’s store, 123 S. Main Street, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
