All training walks should be done at an easy pace. You should be able to talk while walking. If you can’t, slow down. Walk at least three times a week.

You’ve got to be kidding me.
As if this city didn’t have enough crime problems, a story in today’s local news section notes that there’s also a problem with people who illegally own exotic poisonous snakes.
Well, at least we know from his recent news conference that Mayor Willie Herenton isn’t likely to go soft on snakes…

Where is General Sherman when we need him?
OK, I really don’t want to see the city of Atlanta burned to the ground again. But after the Atlanta Hawks scooped up University of Florida star Al Horford in last night’s NBA draft before the Memphis Grizzlies could get him, I admit that thought did cross my mind.
(Florida has won college basketball’s last two national championships, by the way. And I point that out only for the benefit of any non-Gator fans out there who might not be aware of that.)
Anyway, I’m still a Grizzlies fan, although not as enthusiastic a fan as I might have been had the team selected Horford or one of the other Gator players in the draft. At least the Grizzlies still have former Gator player Mike “Skinny” Miller.
In other draft-related developments, I noticed that the Los Angeles Lakers drafted Marc Gasol, the former Lausanne School star and brother of the Grizzlies’ Pau Gasol.
Hmmm. Pau would probably like to play with his brother and Lakers’ star Kobe Bryant wants to be traded. What about a straight-up Pau-for-Kobe swap?
Now I don’t know who would play defense or get a rebound for the Grizzlies if that trade happened, but I’m just sayin’….
(BTW, don’t start questioning why a blog that’s mostly about politics and government has a posting about the NBA draft. The way I see it, as long as the debt payments at the FedExForum are linked to the Grizzlies’ performance, news about the team still qualifies as a story about government.)

A very good friend from my high school days (who is also back in college and set to graduate relatively soon) gave me a wonderful gift yesterday: a big scientific, graphing calculator! I'm borrowing it for my Algebra class (set to start in less than a week). He saved me some
$$$ on that one and I am grateful.
The calculator made me think about the bookbag I've been carrying around all month (and the pens and notebook I've been using). My co-workers are responsible for those! They gave me the bag (filled with supplies) in May. How awesome is that?
Much love to them as well!So I guess that saying (and speech and book) is correct, apparently
it takes a village to raise a child Janet.
BUT:It was
announced today--the University of Memphis is increasing tuition...again. Now I attended YEARS ago and I'm pretty sure I remember the cost of tuition and even I
(the failed Math student) can tell you it has increased more than
100% in a 10-year period. WOW! I just read tuition has gone up EVERY year for the past 20 years.
So where has the BILLIONS of dollars the state of Tennessee raised for education gone?By the way, unless I start spontaneously losing points, it appears that my first Biology grade will be an
A *fierce round of applause*!
I'm still waiting to see it in print though! One class down and 54151513 to go!

Even though gas prices have moderated and even come down in the last few weeks, the high price of a full tank means an added expense for summer vacationers.
Just in time for the 4th of July, Pigeon Forge is reviving last summer’s gas giveaway promotion to help ease the pain of filling up. Random visitors to the city will be treated to $30 in free gas as well as other prizes including free tickets for the theatre, and admission to attractions.
The prizes will be handed out by red t-shirted members of the Gas Patrol, and insiders tell us that the breakfast rooms of the city’s many hotels, the outlet malls and attractions all along the Parkway are popular giveaway spots.
The Pigeon Forge Welcome Center is the only guaranteed distribution
location, with random times picked every morning, and winners are determined
by whoever enters the building at the appointed times.
For more info on Pigeon Forge, check out MyPigeonForge.com or
call 800-251-9100.
